Timer of the Month is a recognition bestowed upon a Jaguar Timer at the beginning of each month. The timer is chosen because they have done exemplary work with their timing business and we at ITS would like to highlight their contributions and hard work.
Our Timer of the Month for February is Danny Potts from Road Race Timing! Danny has over 40 years of experience in timing and is well known all throughout Georgia's running community as a reliable timer and an all-around great guy.
1. What made you decide to become a timer?
I'm a former high school track and cross country coach and I organized and hosted numerous pretty large invitational, regional, and county meets during my career. Included in this was an 8-year stint as the director of the Georgia High School Association State Cross Country Championships. During this time I helped bring Georgia high school sports into the computer era. When I first began as the state meet director, we were still using stopwatches and scoring with finish cards and a calculator. I was the first to bring in computer-generated timing and results to our state meet. So, it was an easy transition, when I decided it was time to get out of teaching, to become a timer.
2. What is the craziest thing that has happened to you on race day?
During one race a couple of years ago, a sudden storm came up right before the race was to start. Before we had a chance to make sure everything was weighted or tied down, one of our clocks was blown over and fell into a ditch that was suddenly filled with rushing water. Before we could get to it, the clock floated off and disappeared! Since we were too busy holding down tents and other equipment, we just had to let it go. We did find it later, but it was a goner. Too bad it wasn't one of Kurt's waterproof clocks!
3. Who is your biggest influence in life?
My biggest influence in life is my family. I am so fortunate to have a sweet, (mostly) patient wife; two handsome, smart sons; a beautiful daughter with a heart of gold (she fosters shelter animals and always has a house full of pets!); and four intelligent and gifted grandchildren.
4. What is your essential go-to race day ITS product?
I love my 7" Jaguar clock! In fact, I just bought another one (9") at the conference.
5. What is one piece of advice that you would give to other timers?
My one piece of advice to other timers would be - Don't panic! Stay calm and everything will be OK. Just be sure you have backups to your backups!
Congratulations again to Danny Potts from Road Race Timing. We at Innovative Timing Systems are proud to have you as a part of our Jaguar family.
